Rwanda is not all about the gorillas

By Claire Dicken, Destination Expert

“This still has to be my most memorable experience in Africa, and not only for having the privilege of seeing the magnificent gorillas but to meet the Rwandan people and hear first-hand of their experiences during the civil war and subsequent genocide”.

As Dian Fossey wrote “In the heart of Central Africa, so high up that you shiver more than you sweat are great, old volcanoes towering up almost 15,000 feet, and nearly covered with rich, green rainforest – the Virungas”.  This is to my mind the most beautiful mountain range in East Africa. Lush forests, tea plantations, deep valleys dotted with lakes and hardly any tourists.

The Virungas also happen to provide one of the last refuges for gorillas but there is much more to this diverse country. Here are some other reasons why you should consider a visit Rwanda.

The Parks – Away from the Virungas there are even less visited parks such as Nungwe which is home to chimpanzees and an array of other primates and birds.

The Capital – A visit to Kigali – one of the cleanest cities in Africa – should always include a visit to the Genocide Memorial Museum in the city – an incredibly moving tribute to all those that lost their lives during the Genocide.

The Culture – Music and dance are incredibly important to the Rwandan people and experiencing an Intore dance is a unique experience.  Visits to local communities and villages are also welcomed.

The Trekking – If you are keen walkers there is a fantastic range of options from trekking up to Dian Fossey’s grave, walking across extinct volcanoes, through local villages, and of course through the rainforest.

The Birds – Rwanda is a birders paradise; Nungwe National Park for example is home to over 280 species.
